She still had his blood on her. She sat opposite the cops, stonewalling them the minute they stopped asking about Johnny and started asking about her brother.

She refused to talk )

Disclaimer: This prompt uses some RP history, but breaks with that continuity to utilize the fourth movie. As such, the other tFatF muses need not treat it as their canon, and the Brian here is not [personal profile] racing_snowman

For an LA summer day, Mia was nothing but cold. )

"...dammit Letty I'm tired of this! I'm tired of you disappearing for weeks at a time. I'm tired of not knowing day to day if I'm ever going to see him again!"

The Latina looked at her lover raging, and tried very hard not to blow up as well. She dropped the duffel bag on the floor, going back to where Mia was. A quick snatch of the other woman's wrist and a jerking pull brought Mia in close against her body.

"I have to go, chica. He needs me."

"I need you. I want him home. I'm so damn tired of this!"

Letty closed her eyes. Never mind how messy they already were; they'd cope, even if they were under the same roof. Mia's pain and frustration cut her deep, and she kissed the woman's head. "I'll talk to him again."

"You're the only hope I have of having the family back," Mia said softly.

"I'll try." It was all Letty could do.

So I'm working the lunch counter, and it's nice and hot like Echo Park always is when I see Harry's delivery truck pull up outside. New guy gets out of it, tall and lanky, sun-bleached blond, cute smile, nice cut under the shirt and the jeans...you get the picture, right?

Turns out he's as smooth with the words as he is with the looks, talking to me nice and friendly, treating me like a person instead of a convenience. And I take a liking to him. I mean, he's smart, he's polite, he's cute...damn but he knew how to charm a girl.

Because I know I'm going to ramble... )

+laughs, then shakes her head+

Should I be playing Salt'n'Pepa while I talk about this?

Or is it like AA? Hi, I'm Mia and I recently discovered girls?

Yeah, recently. Hit me like a ton of bricks, when it just...happened. I mean, it's Letty. As in crazy about Dom since forever, and me digging boys and wearing makeup and all since about the same age?

Me, like GIRLS? +laughs at herself+ It works for us. And I don't put ties on her. Dom didn't either, not when they weren't actually 'together'. So it works.

Still...girls...

Daddy Issues

No one can accuse me of having these. I loved Dad. Loved him as deeply as I love all my family. But it was Dom that was in his hip pocket, as long as I could remember. Mom had a picture of Dom as a baby with Dad's racing helmet in front of him, to help him stand up, and that never really stopped. Dom got in trouble like any kid growing up where we did, and it was Dad that would haul him out of it, talk to him, and then they'd disappear into the garage.

Dad's the one that had the temper too. Mom just took the world at its own speed, but Dad? Well, no wonder Dom was as short-fused as he was when we were kids. He got better, because Dad said he had to.

Still, I wonder...if there'd been a little bit more distance there...no, it happened, and you can't change the past.

But Dom's the one with those issues, not me.

Love's a different sort of thing, hot enough to make you flow into something, interflow, cool and anneal and be welded stronger than what you started with. -- Theodore Sturgeon

{locked from Brian and Roman and Suki}

Hard to believe some guy actually said that, let alone a guy in the fifties. I'd gotten the impression love was that thing guys knew existed, but refused to really cope with.

+sighs+

That's not fair. Brian told me he loved me. He even meant it. Dom was pretty good about showing it to Letty.

But it was the thing between him and Bri that...was more like what Sturgeon meant. If Dom hadn't been an idiot, I'd've lost Bri anyway. Letty and Dom could be rocky enough, and once she saw it, she'd've let go for good.

Because it's love, I think, that made Dom hold back from killing Brian once he knew. It was love that made Bri give over his keys and the Supra. They just both were too idiotic to ever say it out loud.

About three weeks after Jesse's funeral

"Where do I put my things?"

"Who said you're staying?"

The two women stared at each other, one defiant, the other skeptical.

"His room."

"Fine."

`~`~`~`~`

Six months after Jesse's funeral

The door slammed, and Mia looked up to see the face of her friend.

"He won't," she said, before Letty even finished spouting off in Spanish about stubborn men.

"Says he won't put you at risk."

Mia shrugged. "I'm used to him being gone, Letty. You can either stay here, or go to him."

The look Letty gave her was lost as Mia turned back to her homework.

`~`~`~`~`

Mia's eyes fell sleepily on the person coming in the door of her room, before the bed shifted, and that person curled around her, wet tears on her shoulder.

"One or the other?"

Mia shifted, turned until Letty was curled into her chest. "Never thought this was where we'd be."

"It's a start, though."

Mia looked down as Letty looked up, and the kiss just happened, both drawn in like a natural force compelled it.

"It is."

"I am, as I am; whether hideous, or handsome, depends upon who is made judge." -- Herman Melville

There's plenty who might think I'm a bitch for the way I've been handling this past year. Hector's muttered it a couple of times, when I came down on him about the way he's handling my father's garage.

It's not his fault, and we both know it. He stays after I've locked up, and we talk, and things are okay for a few weeks.

There are others who want to paint me as a victim in it all. I laugh in their faces. If I had been less willing to turn a blind eye, Dom wouldn't have gotten that far into trouble. I can't play victim when it's half my fault.

How do I see myself in all this?

Hopefully a survivor. Only time can judge that.

The Past

Mia finished ringing up the last of her usual crowd for the morning, and hauled her bookbag closer to the counter. The dishes were soaking in scalding hot water; they'd keep a few more minutes while she did her chemistry homework. As she was trying to get into the whys and hows of covalent bonding, one of the guys...had to be Leon with that mix of reggae-rap...turned the stereo in the garage up way too loud. Mia just shook her head as Letty and Vince both started shouting at him over the blaring music, one wanting classic rock, and the other demanding country.

Dom's Voice... )
